In today’s world, we are constantly trying to multitask, and this results in us becoming increasingly more stressed. When we are stressed out, our brains become overstimulated, trying to figure out what needs to be done first or the best way to accomplish a task. Eventually, we just shut down. When we get to this point, we are always told to “just close your eyes and take a few deep breaths”. But, you can do one simple step to make this technique more effective: just cover your eyes with your hand. It may sound silly, but, believe me, this is extremely effective.
We get 85-90% of stimulation from our eyes. When we block out this stimulation to our brains, we immediately relax and refocus. However, just closing your eyes isn’t enough. Your brain is still being stimulated by light, which is why taking it one step further to cover your eyes with your hands is so effective. Try it; it only takes one minute to clear your mind and begin to destress.
1. Close your eyes
2. Cover your eyes with your cupped hands (to see how much of a difference covering your eyes with your hands makes, remove your hands. You will immediately see light, causing the stimulations to begin again)
3. Take a slow, deep breath in and release it slowly
4. Repeat this 4-5 times
5. Slowly remove your hands from your eyes
6. Open your eyes
7. Take a final breath in and release
The benefits that come with destressing are immense. It encourages better job performance, a healthier sleep schedule, mental and emotional wellness, and better organization in general. When these begin to fall into place, the rest of your life will start to improve as well. Never underestimate the difference that can come with allowing yourself even a few moments to relax.
Feel better! Feel focused! Feel relaxed!
